Arctic Circle and Santa’s Village then the Snow Village/Ice Hotel

The reason we took the kids here to Lapland is to experience Christmas a little differently if not less commercial. We’ll even in Lapland it’s still commercial but the kids did like it. We rented a car from Hertz and drove about 2 hours south to Rovaniemi to a place called Santa Park http://www.santapark.com/en/santapark which in a cave and completely indoors which in Lapland can save your toes from the cold. The presentation is geared towards children 10 and below. The kids decorated gingerbread cookies, made elves, wrote letters to Santa and ate donuts. I think in comparison, it’s was not very different than going to Vermont to Yankee Candle which I think is similar but in a different scale. I happen to love Yankee Candle…as cheesy as it is…http://www.yankeecandle.com/about-yankee-candle/visit-our-flagship-stores/t. My kids love Yankee Candle Village and believed for years Santa lived there.
What was very cool was being able to go to the imaginary line of the Arctic Circle at Santa’s Village: http://www.santaclausvillage.info/. It too was a commercialized area but the kids were out of doors and we tobogganed and if one had not done reindeer and husky rides you could do that there and be within relatively warm areas for the little ones. There is also a post office, shops to visit and various restaurants and coffee shops to warm up in.
I think for all of us though was the Snow Village and Ice Hotel http://www.snowvillage.fi/. There is a entrance fee to view the hotel if you are not staying in it. We arrived in the late afternoon and it was already dark but all of us felt the drive we well worth the effort. All of the rooms and some public areas are made completely of snow and ice. Personally, it’s a bit cold for me to stay there and thought with the kids the igloo was much better for us…still the sculptures and the overall building is quite impressive. We also had dinner there which was a bit challenging since by the end of the meal we were all cold and ready to go back to our work hotel in Levi.
